The Salvation Army began operations in Johnston and Harnett Counties in 1942 as an outpost of Goldsboro. Then in 1950 work in Johnston and Harnett Counties became the responsibility of Wilson under the guidance of Captain and Mrs. Gillespie. The Salvation Army started out in a white house located at 331 North Eighth Street. May 5, 1955 was a big day in the history of the Salvation Army of Johnston and Harnett Counties. The Salvation Army in Johnston County became a self-supporting unit, no longer an outpost of Wilson. Harnett County still remains as an outpost of Johnston County. Then in 1961 the present building was constructed and for the last 47 years people of Johnston County has been able to receive assistance or to attend a Salvation Army Service at 306 North Brightleaf Blvd.
