From its humble beginnings as a fundraiser started by a Salvation Army captain in San Francisco in 1891, the Red Kettle Campaign has grown into one of the most recognizable and important charitable campaigns in the United States. As part of the campaign, more than 25,000 Salvation Army volunteers fan out across the country to ring bells and solicit spare change donations to the iconic red kettles from holiday shoppers. In 2005, the campaign raised a record $111 million nationwide, with nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars (and the occasional diamond ring or gold tooth) all being returned to help those in the communities where they were raised. Last year, the funds helped The Salvation Army to provide assistance to more than 31 million Americans in need.

Thanks to the generosity of the Sid W. Richardson Foundation, a new $100,000 grant will enable The Salvation Army of Tarrant County?s First Choice program to continue providing a safe place for single mothers to live with their children while receiving help and treatment for the mother?s addictions.
Currently housing 10 mothers and their 17 children, from newborn to age 10, the program offers private apartments with bedrooms and baths for 10 families. These residents receive three hot meals a day, counseling, life skills classes, opportunities for spiritual growth, and a safe, warm place to live, while recovering from chemical dependency and regaining self-sufficiency.
Created in 1990 as the first program of its type in Texas, and remaining one of only three in the state today, First Choice helps single mothers recover from chemical addictions while their children live with them at The Salvation Army?s Fort Worth Area Command facility. With a capacity for 13 families, First Choice maintains a waiting list year-round to fill vacancies that occur in the program, which includes a five-year follow-up ?aftercare? component.
