The Salvation Army - Kerrville Texas
Excitement on the Horizon
Exciting things are on the horizon for The Salvation Army of Kerrville. At a recent open house hosted by The Salvation Army, plans were announced and sketches were unveiled for the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center.
The center, which is planned to open in the summer of 2010, will cover approximately 47,000 square feet of indoor space. Included in the center will be a multi-purpose chapel, full-sized gymnasium, weight and exercise rooms, dance and aerobic studio, coffee bar, a teen lounge, dining hall, classrooms, arts and crafts classroom, meeting rooms and administrative offices. The center will also feature a warm-water outdoor family leisure pool with slides, a heated lap pool, and a four-field baseball and softball complex.
All plans for the facility were designed after a community survey identified a number of needs, and new programs also will be developed that feature the arts, education, recreation, sports and fitness. Memberships will be available for both individuals and families, and the entire community is welcomed to join.
The Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center idea came after Joan Kroc, wife of McDonald's founder Ray Kroc, passed away in 2003, leaving a $1.5 billion trust to The Salvation Army. Kroc's desire was for the money to be used to fund world-class recreational, educational and ministry centers where people from all walks of life can have a life-enriching experience. "I wanted my gift to demonstrate to the world my confidence in The Salvation Army," Mrs. Kroc said at the opening of the first community center in San Diego, California, just days before she passed away.
