Greater Richmond Chorus Show to Benefit The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club
chorusIn honor of The Salvation Army's 125th Anniversary and its service to Central Virginia, the Greater Richmond Chorus, an award-winning a cappella show chorus, will present a benefit show, "A Gift of Music," at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 13th.

This show will be held at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 4491 Springfield Road in Glen Allen and all proceeds from the show will be donated to The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club.

The show will feature the acclaimed singing and dancing of the Chorus, under the direction of Master Director, Roger Tarpy and will include show tunes, ballads and other favorites in 4-part harmony, complete with dazzling costumes and spectacular dancing.

Adding to the variety will be performances from several quartets and the chorus' community outreach ensemble, the Extension Chords.

Kat Simons, Lite 98 radio personality, will emcee the event.

Tickets are available for the nominal fee of $15 ($10 for seniors and children) by calling (804) 282-SING (7464), or by visiting www.grcsings.com.

"Our nonprofit Chorus is pleased to donate proceeds from the show to the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club," said Chorus member, Jean Roberts.

"Making a donation to this fine organization jives well with the Chorus' mission to provide education concerning a cappella harmony as well as to serve the community by providing quality entertainment."

The Greater Richmond Chorus, a 70-voice women's a cappella show chorus, is a 5-time Sweet Adelines Regional Champion and International Semifinalist.

Their most recent appearance on the International stage was in Honolulu, and they are currently preparing to compete in Seattle next October after winning their 3rd consecutive 4-State Regional Championship.

The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, in Richmond's Church Hill neighborhood, provides warm meals, recreation and after school and summer programming with a focus on character/leadership skills, education/career development, health/life skills, arts, and morality/values enhancement to more than 500 youth every year.

The Salvation Army Still Serving More Individuals Than Ever.
Please Continue to Help us Meet the Needs of so Many!!

forecloseOver the last sixteen months, more than 4,900 individuals have received food assistance through The Salvation Army and the increased demand has left The Army's food pantry bare.

"We have always struggled keeping our food pantry stocked," said Jeff Baldwin, Public Relations Director for The Salvation Army Richmond Area Command, "but it's never been this difficult."

From September 2008 through December 2009, The Salvation Army's food pantry has handled more than 2,500 cases; an increase of 23% over the same time frame from the previous year. Of those served, 778 were families that had never received assistance of any kind from The Salvation Army.

"It continues to be an area of need in the community," Baldwin said.

In addition to the Food Pantry, The Salvation Army Richmond Area Command has coninuted to see an increased demand for its other social services programs, such as utility bill and rent/mortgage assistance.

In the last sixteen months, 1,752 individuals have received assitance with their utility bill (gas, oil or electric). This is a 67% increase over the same time period during the previous year.

Richmond Area Command has also seen a 120% increase in rent/mortgage assistance, assisting 439 families since September 2008.

"We are noticing that families and individuals are being forced to make tough choices; deciding whether to pay that utility bill, rent or mortgage, or buying food to eat."

"We are doing all we can to meet the increased demand for our services, and we are confident that the Richmond community will step up and support The Salvation Army like never before, so that we can serve those individuals that are facing financial hardships for the first time."
