Area Command Welcomes New Area Commander

worthysThe Salvation Army Richmond Area Command recently said farewell to its Area Commander; Major Dan Proctor; and its Coordinator of Women's Ministries; Major Francina Proctor; as they left Area Command to accept new posts at The Salvation Army in Oklahoma City, OK.

The Proctors proudly served the Richmond community since June of 2006.

"We have been blessed these last three years with an amazing staff, exceptional volunteers, and thousands of selfless donors - all of whom give so much of themselves so that The Salvation Army Richmond Area Command can help those in need," Major Dan Proctor said.

"You will not be forgotten and we will miss you all."

Replacing the Proctors are Captains David and Dawn Worthy, who will join Richmond Area Command from their current posts as Divisional Youth Leaders for The Salvation Army's Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi Division (ALM).

Captain David Worthy will serve the Central Virginia community as Richmond Area Commander and Captain Dawn Worthy will serve as Coordinator of Women's Ministries.

David, a fourth generation Salvationist and the son of Salvation Army officers, is a 1990 graduate of Asbury College with a degree in broadcast communications. Although he was born in Vermont, David spent most of his impressionable adolescent years in Virginia and graduated from Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke in 1982.

Dawn, the daughter of Salvation Army officers, was born in Hannibal, MO and spent much of her childhood in the Midwest. She is a 1990 graduate of Asbury College with a degree in broadcast communications. After graduation and marriage, she spent a year as a Salvation Army Corps assistant in Pontiac, MI while David attended and graduated from Oakland Police Academy in nearby Oakland Township.

After his brief career in law enforcement, the Worthy's were drafted by The Salvation Army and relocated to south Florida to assist with managing the Army's disaster recovery program in the wake of Hurricane Andrew. This initial two-month commitment gave way to a two-year ministry in Homestead, FL.  This ministry brought them to Tampa, where Dawn became the Program Assistant for the Youth Department at The Salvation Army's state headquarters in Florida. Following two years of service there, David became the first-ever Emergency Services Director for The Salvation Army Florida Division.

In 1997, David and Dawn entered The Salvation Army College for Officer Training and were commissioned as officers in 1999 and for 8 years, served in Florida with appointments in Jacksonville, Key West and Panama City.

The Worthy's were married in 1991 and they have three children; Paige, 12; Connor, 10; and Jack, 9; as well as a Chihuahua named Chicago.

Salvation Army to Send Area Youth to Summer Camp

campThis summer, The Salvation Army Richmond Area Command will send hundreds of area youth to Camp Happyland in Richardsville, VA for a week of fun, education, Bible Study, and socialization with hundreds of other youngsters from Salvation Army's across the Commonwealth and Washington, D.C.

camp_art"This is such a great highlight for our summer Club members," said Hugh Jones, The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club Executive Director.

"Camp Happyland ranks at the top for many of our Club members' summer to-do lists. They really look forward to this one week away from Richmond all year long."

"I love being able to get away from the city to enjoy being outside trying new things like the ropes course," said Joy Jefferson, a 13-year old Club member who, last summer, spent her third year at Camp Happyland.  "I was scared at first, but I have learned to conquer my fears."

"Every year that I have gone to camp Happyland I have met new friends and counselors and last summer I even met a kid from Germany," said Juan Little, a 13-year old Camp Happyland participant.

"Some kids may not have a lot of money to go to camp but I think that they would love to have a chance to see what it is like and to have fun," Little added.

Camp Happyland is a 215-acre camp that offers activities such as archery, arts and crafts, boating, rope courses, hiking, music instruction, nature studies, religious education, team sports and swimming.

The Salvation Army Serving More Individuals Than Ever...Help us Meet the Needs of so Many!!

Over the last seven months, more than 2,000 individuals have received food assistance through The Salvation Army and the increased demand has left The Army's food pantry bare.

"We have always struggled keeping our food pantry stocked," said Jeff Baldwin, Public Relations Director for The Salvation Army Richmond Area Command, "but it's never been this difficult."

"Thousands of Richmonders are feeling the pinch of the bad economy," said Major Dan Proctor, Richmond Area Commander.

From September 2008 through March 2009, The Salvation Army's food pantry has handled more than 1,100 cases; an increase of 54% over the same time frame from the previous year. Of those served, more than 330 families had never received assistance of any kind from The Salvation Army.

"It is unprecedented and the numbers are staggering," said Proctor.

"Our food pantry is running dangerously low."

"Family after family, individual after individual; they are being forced to make tough choices; deciding whether to pay that utility bill, rent or mortgage, or buying food to eat."

"We are doing all we can to meet the increased demand for our services, and we are confident that the Richmond community will step up and support The Salvation Army like never before, so that we can serve those individuals that are facing financial hardships for the first time."
