| Disaster Services Team Stands Ready to help those Affected by Tornadoes The Salvation Army Disaster Services staff and volunteers responded to the recent tornado in Colonial Heights, Virginia on Monday evening, April 28th. Currently, the team and its mobile canteen are on standby for service in Suffolk, Virginia and surrounding areas. Other Salvation Army canteens from Hampton, Norfolk and Williamsburg are already on site in Suffolk. The Salvation Army provides food, clothing and shelter as well as spiritual and emotional support to victims and emergency workers of natural or manmade disasters. Two canteens or “mobile kitchens” are located in Richmond and ready to respond on short notice. Each mobile canteen has the capability of providing more than 100 people with 3 hot meals a day for 3 days. The team has responded to numerous disasters locally and nationally in recent years, including serving in New York and Washington DC after the September 11 attacks, Tropical Storm Gaston and Hurricane Katrina. “Our staff and volunteers stand ready to serve those affected by the recent tornados in the Commonwealth, said Major Dan Proctor Richmond Area Commander for The Salvation Army. “We continue to monitor the events on the ground and are in contact with our Divisional Headquarters in order to meet ongoing needs.” |
