Released 19 October 2010
Houston, TX – On Thursday, October 21, 2010, The Salvation Army
Greater Houston Area Command will proudly break ground on the construction of a
new and more expansive Garden City Boys & Girls Club in the heart of
Houston’s underserved community known as Acres Homes. The original
Garden City Boys & Girls Club was badly damaged by Hurricane Ike in 2008
and has not been fully reopened since the storm.
When
completed in the summer of 2011, the new 12,500 square-foot facility will
increase the daily service capacity for local youth from 80 young people to
300. Additionally, the center will offer services including tutoring,
drug and alcohol prevention classes, computer training, and recreational
activities.
The Salvation Army has been serving the Acres
Homes community for over 40 years and this center will further our promise of
doing the most good for the Greater Houston area.
