Released 20 February 2009
OKLAHOMA CITY (February 20, 2009) - The Arkansas-Oklahoma Salvation Army has officially ended it's emergency services for victims of the ice storm that caused massive power outages in Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma.
- Mountain Home, AR: The Salvation Army of Mountain Home, Arkansas served 16,473 meals, 13,233 drinks, and 4,565 snacks from the end of January through February 11. 250 food boxes, 1,279 cases of water, hundreds of comfort kits and infant supplies, as well as blankets and additional items were provided to those impacted by the ice storm. As of Tuesday, approximately 4,000 customers remained without power. The Mountain Home Corps has ceased emergency operations; however, they still work with storm victims as needed and requested.
- Eastern Oklahoma: In Oklahoma, approximately 100 customers remain without power.
Where there are customers without power in both Arkansas and Oklahoma, it means that they have structural damage to the electrical loop, i.e., weatherhead (a weatherproof entry point for above-ground electrical wiring or telephone lines into a home or business) which prevents the power companies from re-connecting power to their homes. In both states, Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD), are working with emergency management officials to secure funding for those that are still without power and do not have the means to have their weatherhead repaired. Janelle Mulanax, AOK Divisional Director of Social Services and Long-Term Recovery and Oklahoma VOAD President, is coordinating these efforts.
The Salvation Army will continue to work with Emergency Management in both Arkansas and Oklahoma until the needs of those impacted by this storm are met.
Financial donations are needed to support relief efforts. The Salvation Army asks those who want to help the individual and families affected by the Ice Storm of January 2009 to visit www.salvationarmyusa.org or call 1-800-SAL-ARMY and designate Arkansas and Oklahoma Ice Storms. Monetary donations will ensure The Salvation Army can meet the most immediate needs of those impacted by the storm.
