MENA (April 14, 2009) - As the community of
Mena continue to clean-up debris and recover whatever is left of their
possessions, The Salvation Army continues to provide hot meals snacks and
drinks to responders and those impacted by the storm and emotional and
spiritual care.
As power returns to the majority of community, services are
transitioning from emergency service to recovery. Since Friday evening,
The Salvation Army has served over 6,000 meals. Volunteers,
employees, and Officers have logged 1,680 hours of service.
The Salvation Army will be serving meals through Wednesday
lunch. However, they are providing the food for additional 4,500 - 5,000
meals to cover through the weekend. First Baptist Church and The
Crossing church are partnering with The Salvation Army to serve those
meals.
The Salvation Army will be providing food boxes, clothing
vouchers, and emotional and spiritual care. Services will be provided in
four areas: Mena, DeQueen, Fort Smith, and Hot Springs. In DeQueen,
the social services will be provided at The Salvation Army Thrift Store.
In Mena, services will be provided on an appointment basis. The
hours for Fort Smith: 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM and 1-00 - 4:00 PM Monday thru
Thursday and 9:00 to Noon on Friday. The Hours for Hot Springs are
the same as Fort Smith. The hours for DeQueen are Monday, Tuesday,
Thursday and Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Joe Finley, Arkansas Service Unit Representative states "The
Salvation Army has a presence in Mena and Polk County all year long.
Although the Thrift Store may be damaged and out of commission temporarily, The
Salvation Army will remain available in Mena to those in need."
