Annual Salvation Army Festival Celebrates Gwinnett County's Multi-Ethnic Population

(March 7, 2011, Lawrenceville) Gwinnett County is the fastest growing large county in Georgia. These conditions have created a county of extremes in population, density, income, and cultural diversity.  In fact, in just a few years, Gwinnett's population has changed from a rural/suburban community to one where 90% of the multi-ethnic population lives in urban areas. From 5pm-8pm, March 12, 2011, at The Salvation Army Lawrenceville Corps Community Center (3455 Sugarloaf Parkway, Lawrenceville, GA 30044), The Salvation Army will celebrate Gwinnett County's multi-culturalism during its 5th Annual Festival of Cultures.

The Festival of Cultures is a fun, family-friendly cultural event open to the public. "Our gym is transformed into a Festival like atmosphere completes with tents, décor, and a performance stage," explains Hazel Barrett, The Salvation Army Lawrenceville Corps' Festival of Cultures Coordinator. "Our staff and volunteers dress in authentic attire, cook and serve food, and showcase musical and other performances from their native countries. Those countries include Jamaica, Mexico, Puerto Rico, America, Columbia, Korea, Africa, and more."

Barrett says the event usually has about 300 attendees and a $5 donation is suggested to help support The Salvation Army's World Services efforts.

"Last year, this event helped raise money to support our Haiti Relief efforts," recalls Barrett. "This year, donations will go towards The Salvation Army's World Service Programs, which help find solutions to poverty and improve living conditions in under-developed countries. "
