Salvation Army responds to Gwinnett County Flood Evacuees
(Lawrenceville, September 21, 2009) At the request of local Emergency Management Agencies, The Salvation Army will continue its Gwinnett County Emergency Disaster Relief efforts through this evening and Tuesday Afternoon.
Since early Monday morning, The Salvation Army Lawrenceville Disaster Unit and relief workers have been roving through effected Gwinnett County neighborhoods providing emergency food, and water to first responders and flood victims.
By early afternoon, relief workers were responding to calls for emergency assistance from an evacuated mobile home community in Lilburn, and providing blankets, food, beverages, and counseling to families evacuated from Lawrenceville's Magnolia Apartments.
"We are still in an assessment phase as damage to homes is sporadic and all across the county," Explains Captain Bobby Westmoreland, Commanding Officer of The Salvation Army Lawrenceville Corps. "We have called in additional volunteers to prepare and distribute meals for this evening. If the weather cooperates we may be able to shift to clean-up and recovery relief efforts by Tuesday afternoon. Those efforts would include distributing clean-up kits and partnering with area churches to assist the elderly. "
