Our Volunteers are our greatest assets
The Salvation Army of Augusta is trying to encourage participation and provide community awareness of all the programs we offer. The programs we have are successful due to individuals and organizations such as: business, schools, and churches. We are fortunate to live in a caring community and realize that many of you have programs of your own that you may be working on. Please take some time to look at the list provided and sign up for any of the projects listed below that you may be able to participate with. Our volunteers are the greatest assets we have.
- Furniture Drive: We run this program throughout the year. Furniture that is collected is brought to our thrift stores to be sold to help programs such as our Alcohol and Substance Abuse programs. Many pieces of furniture are given away to those families that have lost their homes or apartments due to fire, weather, or other types of tragedy.
- In-kind Shelter Drives: Last year alone we lodged 29,312 people. In-kind shelter Drives are developed to get items such as: shampoo, brushes, toothbrushes, soap, and diapers. These items are always needed by our residents. A more detailed list is included.
- Back Pack Drive: Back Packs and schools supplies are needed as well. On average we have 10 to 14 children that stay in our shelter on a nightly basis. The children stay until their families are able to relocate to a more permanent location. Each group of mothers that come to our shelter is in need of school supplies for their children. Adults have need of Back Packs as well.
- Christmas in July: A great opportunity for Churches to get involved with Grocery Gift Cards collections. Last year, The Salvation Army fed over 89,000 people. During the Christmas Holidays we were able to provide food to over 11,000 less fortunate individuals. By donating Grocery Gift Cards you will enable us to be able to help even more individuals.
- Coat Drive: Every year, children go without coats. Please, if you have coats that you don't wear anymore or your kid's coats no longer fit, donate them to The Salvation army. The gift of warmth is one of the greatest gifts you can give.
- Blanket Drive: Blankets, towels, sheets, and pillows are needed throughout the year. Our shelter houses over 90 people a day, any donation made will be put to use. All donations are needed for both the women's shelter and men's shelter, as well as for those that are in living on the streets.
Christmas
- Adopt-a -Kettle: The Red Kettles you see every Christmas season are the most visible icon of The Salvation Army. The money raised through the Red Kettles provides much needed funding for our Christmas programs, and other programs through out the year. Please adopt a kettle for one of the many days they are run. Kettles run Monday through Saturday, starting November 7, 2008 - December 26, 2008. Volunteers can include families, clubs, businesses, church groups, or any other type of organization.
- Fill a Stocking: Fill a Stocking with goodies for a needy child and turn sad faces into happy faces. The Salvation Army provides more than 3,000 children with stockings at Christmas. The stockings are 24" inches long, filled with items such as: candy, pencils, coloring books, gender neutral toys, socks, toiletries, and any other small gift ideas.
- Adopt an Angel: 677 Children were adopted last year. We need help to make sure that all children have a Merry Christmas. Your group can adopt an angel by picking up an "angel tag" from the Augusta Mall's Christmas tree after Thanksgiving or by calling The Salvation Army directly. Each tag includes the child's gender, age, clothing size, and a "wish" gift.
- Santa's Workshop: As Christmas nears, toys, stockings, coats and food will be pouring into the Christmas Toy Shop to be distributed to thousands of families in need. There is a great demand for volunteers to help sort and bag groceries, sort and organize coats, Angel Tree gifts and set up and decorate our Toy Shop for the BIG Day. Volunteers can work one or more days, in full or part time shifts, with a group or by yourself. This is a great opportunity for civic groups, youth groups and churches.
- Christmas Toy Shop: Last year The Salvation Army helped 2449 families experience the joy of Christmas through our Toy Shop. For three days applicants are guided through our Toy Shop where they receive toys, stockings and groceries. Adult volunteers are needed to assist applicants. ADULTS can work one or more days in a full or part-time shift.
- Online Red Kettles: Personal, Group, or Business kettles can be hosted on line by you. You can invite others via e-mail to contribute to your Kettle. All contributions are processed through the Salvation Army's secure payment system. The contributions will assist your community in providing meaningful assistance to many needy families, children and shut-ins, at Christmas and year round.
