The Salvation Army Austin Citadel Corps has served the community since 1889. It is a warm and friendly place. An excellent relationship exists between the Corps and the local Adult Rehabilitation Center. They have an active Corps Council and are proud of the "blended ministry" that the Corps offers: Youth, Traditional, Contemporary, Recovery, and Community. The Corps is focusing on growth in programs. To accomplish this, they have a mix of traditional music, contemporary music, brass band, praise & worship band and other special music to enhance the Holiness Meeting.

The Salvation Army Austin Citadel Receives New Officers Just in Time for a Busy Summer Schedule of Activities
Austin, Texas, July 2009---Lieutenants Francisco and Jan Zuniga who have yet to unpack all of their
personal belongings and settle into their new quarters are off and running in
Austin, Texas. “I have one word to
describe our work here in Austin,”
Lieutenant Frankie, as he prefers to be called, said. “The word is ‘WOW.’ There
are so many opportunities to serve here and there are so many programs already
in place to be a part of and help expand on. We have been so graciously
received by our soldiers and the people of Austin. We are so blessed to be here.”
His wife, Lieutenant Jan, shared some
visions about what she would like to see accomplished during their ministry in Austin. “We want to take a proactive role in the
community,” she said. “We want to inform people about our services of helping
people with shelter, counseling and other basic needs. But most of all, we want people to know about
God’s love and mercy. Now that’s
exciting.”
The recently married couple received their assignment to Austin on June 24 at Lieutenant Frankie’s graduation and commissioning ceremony from
the Evangeline Booth College in Atlanta, Georgia.
Lieutenant Jan graduated from Evangeline Booth College in June of 2008 and was
stationed in Chattanooga TN prior to her marriage to Lieutenant
Frankie. She is also a graduate of Toccoa
Hills college in Georgia. In addition to serving as commissioned
Salvation Army officers the Zuniga’s are both also Ordained Ministers.
Among the many programs that the
Zuniga’s will oversee is the new Salvation Army Performing Arts School music
camp that started on July 13. “We want
The Salvation Army to rise up and what better way than to offer Music lessons
to children and eventually all ages.”
The School of Performing Arts program offered at The Salvation Army Austin gives children in the community an
opportunity to participate in high quality music training at no cost.
Students may elect to receive lessons in piano or guitar from instructors who
are trained in music and also receive a top notch education in chorus, theory
and band. “In addition to music
activities children will participate in crafts, sports and weekly outings,”
states Lieutenant Jan. “We also have a
final concert planned for August 16 so that the parents and community can come
hear and see the children’s accomplishments.”
The Zuniga’s met at the School For
Officers Training, September 2007. They have known the Salvation Army since
childhood. Both are 2nd and 5th generation Salvation Army. Lieutenant Frankie’s parents are Majors
Francisco and Carolyn Zuniga. Lieutenant Jan’s parents are Majors James and
Patricia Robbins.
First order after unpacking a few items
was finding the grocery store, post office, gas station and the church
office. “We can find our way from home
to the office and back. Everyday is a
new adventure and something new to see, says Lieutenant Frankie. “Just like God’s provision.”

Summer Music Day Camp
The
Summer Music Day Camp is halfway through the four-week program and many young
lives have changed for the good. “I love playing the Cornet in the band,”
exclaims James. I wanted to play the
trumpet last year but my parents couldn’t afford to rent one for me. I am so glad Grandma brought my sister and me
to the Salvation Army.” (left - James playing the Cornet).
The Salvation
Army Austin Citadel Corps is dedicated to enriching the lives of young people
through programs and services that uplift them and entice them to stay positive
and motivated.
At Austin
Citadel Corps and Community Center children are offered a safe environment in
which to explore and maximize their potential. Our staff and volunteers
serve as positive role models for these children, and provide them the
leadership skills that parents have come to expect and appreciate from The
Salvation Army. “We had one of our campers bring the whole family to
church last Sunday, says Lieutenant Frankie. When the alter call was made the campers Mother responded to the tender
call of the Holy Spirit and came and knelt at God’s mercy seat. God is good!” (click here for more pictures)
