Ready, Willing and Able: Salvation Army Looking to Train A Few Good Men and Women As predicted, on Tuesday, government forecasters warned of a busier-than-normal hurricane season, with National Weather Service forecasters stating that they expect 13 to 17 tropical storms, with seven to 10 of them becoming hurricanes. As recent years have proven that Maryland is not immune to such tropical storms and/or Hurricanes, in addition to readily preparing its fleet of Emergency Disaster Canteens, on Friday and Saturday, June 22nd and 23rd, 8:00am-4:30pm at the Loyola College Graduate Center, Timonium Campus, 2034 Greenspring Drive, The Salvation Army of Greater Baltimore and Baltimore Volunteer Central will co-host a Disaster Training Seminar to enlist and ensure that Willing volunteers, are Ready and Able to serve in the event of a local disaster.
During the two-day workshop, pre-registered attendees will select from interactive and instructional courses on Disaster Food Services, Emergency and Spiritual Care during Disaster, Medic First Aid BasicPlus, Preparing your Congregation for Disaster, and an introductory course on The Salvation Army's Emergency Disaster Services. Volunteers will be trained and certified to serve as members of The Salvation Army's Baltimore Area Disaster Emergency Relief Team, or "DERT" as it is known in the organization's circles.
"The goal of this disaster training Seminar is to enlist individuals to serve as volunteers during times of crisis and provide them with important disaster-related skills and knowledge through a quality training experience." Explains Major Gary Haupt, whose 7 years of service to The Salvation Army in Florida has afforded him extensive knowledge and experience in Disaster Services.
"A Well trained DERT team is comprised of local residents who can be called upon to volunteer in a number of areas including preparing and serving meals on the Salvation Army's Emergency Disaster Canteen, providing grief and spiritual council to victims, and overseeing the logistical aspects of temporary shelters, Disaster Warehouses, Disaster Command Centers, and Disaster Relief Centers. All of which is and needs to done expeditiously, efficiently, and effectively in order to ensure we meet the needs of any and all victims."
