Volunteer Opportunities
There are many ways throughout the year that you can help The Salvation Army and the people of the Middle River Community.
Why Volunteer?
The Salvation Army is doing the most good through various programs and family services that meet the needs of families in Middle River and the surrounding area. Our facility is made up of a church, classrooms, offices, large meeting room, games room and a gymnasium. Programs for young people and adults are held throughout the week and people who are in need can receive assistance with heating and utility bills, rent and mortgage payments, food, clothing, and holiday assistance including Thanksgiving food baskets and Christmas toys. But The Salvation Army could not provide all this help without the assistance of volunteers like you.
Visiting Nursing Homes
The Salvation Army has a League of Mercy program that travels to area nursing homes to visit shut ins who are unable to venture out on their own. We welcome you to join us in visiting with the nursing homes to share a smile and a hug with someone. For the visitation schedule call the office at 410-682-2450.
After School Care
In connection with the Boys and Girls club, the Salvation Army runs an after school program for children from different local elementary schools. We need volunteers to help tutor the children, play games and teach arts and crafts and other fun activities. The after school program runs Monday-Friday from 3:00-8:00PM
Summer Day Camp
The Salvation Army runs a summer day camp program for children from 6 to 12. The camp runs for 10 weeks in the summer from 8:00AM-6:00PM and we need volunteers to help with games and activities as well as chaperone field trips to area attractions.
Christmas Angel Tree
Every year The Salvation Army assists hundreds of needy families to provide toys and clothes for children at Christmas time. We need help manning Angel Tree tables at local area shopping centers and picking up, sorting and packing donated toys. We also need volunteers to assist with the distribution of the donated items to the family on our "Toy Shop Distribution" day.
Red Kettles
The Salvation Army has become a permanent fixture at Christmas time with the bell ringer standing by a red kettle outside area retail outlets. We need volunteers to stand at the red kettle and ring the bell to encourage generous donors to give during our most important fund raising time of the year.
