Scholarships Awarded in Memory of Fallen Salvation Army Officers
In March, The Salvation Army of Central Arkansas awarded two college scholarships in the memory of Majors Philip Wise and Richard Brittle to two NLR High School Students: Cody Tripp and Kristen Burrell. Our next golf tournament to fund more scholarships is scheduled for June 25.
Cody is a long-time member of The Salvation Army's North Little Rock Corps. "No one in my family has ever gotten the chance to go to college and I want to be the first to do so," said Cody.
Kristen is a 17-year-old single mother. "I'm currently going to school and working 20+ hours a week making barely enough to pay my bills. I have no car and rely on the city bus to get to where I need to go. I’ve been trying to save up for a car and for college but find it impossible. This scholarship would help me pursue my goals and to get on my feet so I don’t have to worry about money and can just focus on my education."

The Philip Wise and Richard Brittle Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Major Philip Wise and Major Richard Brittle who were Salvation Army officers from Central Arkansas.
Major Philip Wise was tragically taken from us on Christmas Eve 2009 in North Little Rock, Arkansas as he was wrapping up Christmas kettles for the year. Major Wise had a desire to help young people with an interest in music develop their skills for the purpose of evangelism and worship of God.
Major Richard Brittle was the Area Commander for New Orleans, LA when Hurricane Katrina paralyzed that city. He and his wife cared for the men, women, and children in their shelter for several days as they awaited their rescue from the flooded region. During this time, Major Brittle was attacked by a microscopic parasite that would eventually become cancerous and take his life two years later (January 5, 2008) while he was the Area Commander in Central Arkansas.
UALR Basketball Assistant Coach Joe Kleine is serving as the tournament’s Honorary Chair. Kleine was a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic gold medal team and won an NBA Championship with the Chicago Bulls in 1998.
The Salvation Army's second Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held at the Burns Park Golf Course on June 25, 2012. The event includes lunch provided by Golden Corral, door prizes, and participation gifts.
