Give a Gift that Means Something
The season of giving is in full swing, along with the colder weather that comes along with winter. On Dec. 24, the American Red Cross and Salvation Army are offering the community an opportunity to give and make a difference to someone in need, before folks celebrate the holidays with their family.
The two nonprofits are partnering for a blood and coat drive to meet the most basic needs of warmth and wellness.
"The Salvation Army and the Red Cross have been coordinating disaster relief efforts for decades, and we are proud to partner at Christmas to give everyone in our community an opportunity to give a gift to our neighbors in need," said Salvation Army spokesperson Kathy Barbeire.
The winter months are historically a challenging time for the Red Cross to collect blood donations to meet patient needs. Holiday travel, seasonal illnesses and inclement weather can prevent donors from making or keeping their appointments.
“Patients don’t get to take a holiday vacation from needing blood,” said Marci Manley, spokesperson for the Red Cross Greater Ozarks-Arkansas Blood Services Region. “Blood has a shelf life. We need a consistent flow of donors to ensure there’s a stable supply of blood for those patients who depend on it.”
The Red Cross must collect an average of 15,000 pints of blood a day to fill that need. Blood donations can be used to treat accident victims, cancer patients, premature babies and organ transplant recipients.
