Each year The Salvation Army seeks to bring the real spirit of Christmas to hurting families through a variety of programs that come together to serve the family:

In 2009 The Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte will:

  • Serve over 15,000 children
  • Help over 7,500 families with Christmas Assistance
  • Assist over 1,000 senior citizens
  • Work with over 3,000 volunteers

Now through November 6, The Salvation Army Christmas Center is registering families from Mecklenburg and Union counties for Christmas Assistance. Every day a record number of families stand in line for hours. We are seeing record numbers of families this year-as many as 250 per day! (Last year we registered an average of 200 families per day.) When a family registers for assistance, The Salvation Army carefully evaluates the family, using 125 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines to establish eligibility. A family of four, for instance, earns an annual income of $27,563.

Families of all kinds register for assistance. Many are single moms and dads, simply trying to provide basic necessities for their family. Some are children who live with grandparents, relatives, or caregivers because their parents cannot or will not care for them. Others are unemployed parents, struggling to stay financially afloat. We also register senior citizens in our Silver Bells program, who are desperately stretching every penny they have.

Your partnership helps us to make the holidays joyful for many of our neighbors in need.
