The Salvation Army Launches Arts Conservatory
New music and arts program begins at two Boys & Girls Clubs
This past fall, 45 students enrolled in The Salvation Army's new music and arts conservatory. The program opened at two locations, the Belmont Road and Marsh Road Boys & Girls Clubs.
"Our goal is to make music and fine arts education as accessible to all students as possible," Major Todd Hawks, Charlotte Area Commander said. "Students who might not be able to afford school band fees or private music instruction now have a place where they can receive quality instruction for the cost of $10 a year."
Broken into two semesters, the conservatory began by offering percussion, stomp, and chorus, along with dinner in-between electives.
"Our students often cannot afford to purchase or rent instruments," Daniel Simmons, assistant divisional music director, said. Even the $10 annual fee can present a challenge to their families."
Two dedicated music educators volunteer their time, teaching creatively with what they have. The stomp group makes music with trash cans, paint buckets, and PVC pipes.
"Music and The Salvation Army have a long history," Major Todd Hawks said. "I am pleased that we are able to introduce an appreciation of the arts to a new generation of young people."
