Easter and Good Friday

AD

Red Kettles
The Red Kettles and bell ringers are perhaps the most visible community-wide Salvation Army program. However, during the holidays the results from the nickels, dimes and dollars put into the kettles provides needy families with Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, gifts for children, coats and shoes for kids with none to wear, and visitation to the elderly and imprisoned who have no one to care for them. The bell ringing goes on to provide for services to the public throughout the months following the holidays.

Angel Tree
Although Christmas may be months away, the Salvation Army is already making sure no child awakes to find there is nothing under the tree. The organization will once again this year provide the Angel Tree program to benefit the needy children of the Danville area.

According to Captain Karl Dahlin, the Salvation Army has sponsored the program "for many, many years, and my first Christmas effort in Danville" and each year the number of recipients grows.

"The goal of the Angel Tree is to provide new toys, clothing and Christmas stockings for needy children and food for the family on Christmas Day," Dahlin said. "Those who participate in the program are very grateful. They send thank you cards that I keep on my desk all year round."

Once individuals sign up and are approved, an Angel Ornament is created with gift ideas and is hung on Angel Trees in K-Mart and Wal-Mart as well as a number of corporate trees, explained Salvation Army Social Services Case Worker Kim Wood.

Community members, who wish to help take an ornament from the tree, purchase gifts and return the gifts to the same store they picked their angel at or to the local Salvation Army on Henry Street.

The Salvation Army makes sure each child in the Angel Tree program receives a blessing for Christmas. If a child is not picked from the Angel Tree or the gift is small, The Salvation Army provides a trip through The Salvation Army Toy Shop on distribution day. There parents can "shop" for toys purchased by The Salvation Army with funds raised by our Red Kettles.

Applications for the Angel Tree will be taken October 3-6, 9:30am-11:30am
                                                            October 7, 3:30pm - 6:00pm

Angel Tree Sponsors
Each year, sponsors ranging from neighborhood associations to private companies volunteer to place Angel Trees in high-traffic areas within their community, organization or office. Many sponsors provide a tree as an added donation along with promotional materials to inform their community, members or staff of the program along with confidential information about the children, who will benefit from their generosity. The sponsoring organization also serves as a collection point for the gifts, and provides secure storage until a volunteer from The Salvation Army can collect the gifts for distribution along with food and meals to help needy families enjoy the holiday season.

Angel Tree Volunteers
In many locations, The Salvation Army needs volunteers to help distribute the gifts along with food for holiday meals to the participating families. Often times, employees and family members of the sponsoring organization help distribute their group's gifts throughout their community. Community volunteer and service groups; church groups and retired senior volunteer programs often aid The Salvation Army during the holidays and throughout the year, but more volunteers are always needed.
