One volunteer's story
When her children are in school, volunteer Shawn Nix likes to do whatever she can--from keying data to sorting groceries into bags.
"The Salvation Army gives me places to help where I know I am making a difference," she says. "People there are doing the right things for the right reasons, and they do it on a shoestring. The Salvation Army knows what it's about."
|Last year, volunteers contributed more than 14,000 hours of service at The Salvation Army in Durham, Orange, and Person counties. That's 14,000 hours invested in positive change for our communities!
You can make us even more effective by volunteering to:
- Tutor at-risk kids after school
- Mentor teens
- Teach English as a Second Language
- Help us make Christmas special!
- Paint, build, or clean up
- Lead special activities
- Keep Family Store bargains organized
- Take photos of our team in action
- Teach children to use computers effectively
- Stock our food pantry
- Organize a food drive
We'll tell you upfront: all volunteers working regularly with children receive a background check. So please be patient while we wait for the results. We also ask that young people (under 18) who volunteer be supervised by adults.
