The Salvation Army Continues Ongoing Disaster Relief Efforts
Salvation Army mobile kitchen unit dispatched for sixth day
clean up kits distributed at Emergency Public Service Centers
Daytona Beach, Fla.
(May 27, 2009) - The Salvation Army of Volusia/ Flagler counties dispatched the mobile kitchen unit (canteen) for the sixth day in row on Tuesday, in response to last week's flooding. On Monday, 500 clean-up kits were distributed to victims, with another 500 distributed Tuesday.
The canteen continues to make stops at the Westside Baptist Church Shelter on Mason Ave., and the Sica Hall Shelter, providing 634 meals for flood victims since Friday. In addition, The Salvation Army handed out 500 clean-up kits on Monday from the South Daytona and Holly Hill Emergency Service Distribution Centers. Another 1,600 clean-up kits, including bug repellent, arrived from Tampa on Wednesday to continue distribution to survivors.
The Salvation Army Social Services was also available to flood victims at the Emergency Centers, providing information for assistance with food boxes, and furniture & clothing vouchers (to our Thrift Store).
Clean-up kits contain a broom, mop, cleaning supplies, gloves, mask, trash bags, and a bucket.
"Governor Crist's visit drew much needed attention to our community's dire situation which we hope will bring additional aid to the victims, and until then, The Salvation Army is prepared to continue feeding, distributing clean-up kits, and assisting with social services as much as needed", Captain Perez said.
The Salvation Army asks people who want to help those affected by the flooding to visit www.salvationarmyusa.org or call 1-800-SAL-ARMY. Monetary donations are needed to meet survivors' most immediate needs. A $100 donation will feed a family of four for two days, provide two cases of drinking water and one household cleanup kit, containing brooms, mops, buckets and cleaning supplies.
