Majors Vern and Martha Jewett
Vern Jewett was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, and Martha in Winston-Salem, NC. Both Vern and Martha's parents are retired Salvation Army officers. They have three adult children: Anna and son-in-law, Justin Street, reside in Brooklyn, NY; Sarah and son-in-law, Jeff Clarke, live in Winston-Salem, NC; Booth currently is living in Atlanta, GA.
Vern is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He graduated from East Carolina University and received his Master of Arts in Religion from Asbury Theological Seminary. He has done post-graduate work at Emory University's Candler School of Theology. Martha received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Asbury College.
Vern and Martha Jewett have served as commanding officers in Waycross, Columbus and Albany, Georgia, as well as Hialeah and Lakeland, Florida. For the past twelve years Major Vern Jewett has been the voice of The Salvation Army radio program, "Heartbeat," currently being aired on over 1500 radio stations in the U.S.A.
Vern and Martha have served at Territorial Headquarters and twice on the College for Officers Training staff in Atlanta, where he served most recently as the Principal, and she as the Director of Special Services.
Vern and Martha served as the Divisional Commander and Divisional Director of Women's Ministries of the North and South Carolina Division since February 2003. In July 2008 they will assume the same responsibilities in the Florida Division.
