Congratulations, Jimmy!
Graduation celebrations abound this time of year and we are celebrating, too. Jimmy Tucker, a resident of our shelter, received degrees from Atlantic Vocational Technical School and Broward College. Jimmy studied electrical engineering in a joint program with the two institutions.
The staff and residents honored Jimmy for his accomplishments with cake, ice cream and gifts. Jimmy says at one time in his life he had no direction, but the encouragement of a friend helped him get his life on track. Jimmy worked part time while attending school. He would eventually like to own his own company and plans to continue his education with classes in business administration to make that dream come true.

Plymouth Colony Reopens

The Salvation Army recently celebrated the re-opening of Plymouth Colony, a 34 unit apartment facility for homeless families in Broward County. The fruition of this project reflects a combination of vision, team work and just plain hard work, stretching over the past three years.
The dedicatory address was given by the Army's Florida Divisional Commander Lt. Colonel Vern Jewett. Colonel Jewett spoke of God's grace and The Salvation Army's ability to apply that grace in practical ways to help the homeless members of our community.
The dedication was followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony, tours of the facility and a reception. "The re-opening of Plymouth Colony ends a two year long renovation project that took the aging and decrepit facility down to the cement block walls and rebuilt it into a beautiful facility for homeless families. The facility puts The Salvation Army at the forefront of service providers for the homeless population in Broward County," says Major Tom Louden.
Doing the Most Good Luncheon
The Salvation Army recently held its annual "Doing the Most Good" luncheon. The event was designed to educate supporters as well as raise funds to provide services for homeless individuals and families. Approximately 110 business and community leaders attended the event, held at The Salvation Army's Center for Worship and Service in Fort Lauderdale. The one hour program included a talk by Major Tom Louden, area commander of The Salvation Army, who shared how his father's encounter with The Salvation Army as a teenager changed the course of his family's lives.
The luncheon gave guests an inside look at Salvation Army services for homeless families and allowed them to gain insight into the varied causes of homelessness in our community. Cassy Lavoie, a former client who now has a successful career, shared the story of her struggles and ultimate success with guests.
The Salvation Army's Transitional Housing program works with individuals to help them identify the causes of their homelessness and then provides training, life skills and counseling to help people become self sufficient.
The event raised $29,000 in gifts and pledges to help the Army provide housing and services to families. For more information call 954-524-6991.
