Christmas Toyland

Clothes, books, food, toys and gifts will brighten alot of holidays this year for thousand of people when they visit our Christmas Toyland.  Sign-up for Toyland was held in October - and a record number of people signed up for assistance this year!  Toyland distribution is scheduled for December 11th for eligible senior citizens and December 12-16 for all other eligible families and individuals.  Toyland will be held this year at the former Linens-n-Things in Central Park, 1360 Carl D. Silver Parkway, Fredericksburg.  Special thanks to the Rappaport Companies for their donation of the building - and to Rick Frank of Stellar One for helping us to find the building!

 Shoe Fund

In 2008, The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary exceeded $1-million dollars raised through the years for The Shoe Fund - which provides new shoes to needy children in our area. Shoe certificates are distributed to the parents of the children through the school nurses in our area.  This year, once again in partnership with WFLS-FM, several events are being planned in December to raise funds for the 2010 Shoe Fund.  On December 16th, you are invited to join WFLS morning jocks Geoff and Jessica for lunch at Cheeseburger in Paradise in Fredericksburg, with 100% of the $10 donation benefitting the Shoe Fund.  Tickets will be available at the door beginning at 11:00 a.m.  Stay tuned for addtional events including a radio-thon and on-air auction.

moonlight

A record crowd attended the 21st annual Music by Moonlight on September 12th to hear the wonderful Fredericksburg Big Band.  THANKS to all our sponsors and attendees who supported this event, which raises money to send children to Camp Happyland every summer.  Thanks also to all the SAWA members who baked cookies, popped popcorn, manned kettles, passed out flyers and everything in between to help make this such a success.  In 2009, 75 children from the Fredericksburg Area attended Camp Happyland, approximately 30 miles west of Fredericksburg.

Toyland Riverboat Cruise

Thanks to all that supported the Toyland Riverboat Cruise!  More than $11,000 was raised to support the clothing fund for Toyland 2009.  Special thanks to all who gave door prizes and auction prizes as well as all who came out and had such a good time dancing and dining on the Rappahannock River!!

ABOUT SAWA - The primary focus of the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary (SAWA) is to help disadvantaged children in the area.  Activities include events to help send children to Camp Happyland such as the annual Music by Moonlight concert.  The Women's Auxiliary is also very active with a Book Buddies program, raising funds and collecting new books to make sure that area children have new books not only during the school year and at holiday time but also at summer camp.  SAWA also is an active participant with Toyland, raising funds for Toyland clothing to make sure there is enough clothing for local families and children and personally helping throughout the entire Toyland drive. SAWA also works very hard to purchase shoes for needy children in the area through the Shoe Fund, which is nearing the $1,000,000 mark thanks to the efforts of local media personality Brian Strobel and SAWA volunteer Kim Mitchell.  SAWA volunteers help the Salvation Army Fredericksburg Corps in many other areas throughout the year, including with the Angel Tree program, with Thanksgiving food vouchers, and of course, during the Christmas season with the Red Kettle program.  For more information on becoming a member, call 540-899-2719.

Brightening Children's Lives through Books

Dedicated to the belief that instilling an early love of reading is key to the future success of all children, particularly those underprivileged youngsters served by the Salvation Army's Toyland, The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary launched "Book Buddies", a program to obtain new books for them.

A variety of generous-hearted sources - civic associations, schools, churches, our regional libraries and numerous individuals - donate books and money each year. Each year response is wonderful.  We are able to reach our goal of giving new books to more than a thousand youths.  Grateful thanks go to Dr. LeRoy Essig of Medical Specialists of Virginia for his unfailing support. Endless thanks go to all of the sponsors, coordinators, and individual book donors who brightened the lives of our children with the gift of reading.      -Sharon West, Book Buddies Chairwoman

    History of The Shoe Fund

In 1980 Brian Stroebel, now retired from local radio station WFLS, did an on the airshoe fund" drive in Richmond, VA.  His boss asked him to do the same here in Fredericksburg.  Over the next eight years thousands was raised.  In 1988 the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary took over the project.  Brian Stroebel continues to aid the program through auctions and on air shoe fund drives which are instrumental in getting donations from area banks and other donors.  Thank you, Brian!

Jim Blackwell, manager of our local Ukrop's, suggested a new marketing tool whereby a paper "shoe" with a bar code on it is scanned at the cash register to encourage giving to the shoe fund.   Brian Stroebel arranged for participating Arby's restaurants to use the bar code "shoe" at their registers also.  Well, they were continuously scanned at the registers raising a phenomenal amount of money.  We would like to thank Jim Blackwell and Dan Wallace Enterprise, which owns Arby's, for their participation.
