FedEx volunteers and United Way celebrate on September 25 the weeklong FedEx Cares community service with multiple acts of caring; decorating projects at The Salvation Army
Scores of FedEx volunteers will celebrate FedEx Cares Week with United Way of Greater Greensboro at The Salvation Army, where the will clean, paint and assist at a breakfast rally, 9 a.m., September 25, 821 South Aycock Street, Greensboro.
"The fantastic outpouring of caring service is in direct proportion to the significance of FedEx's massive facility here and the big hearts of the teams of volunteers," said Major Paul Egan, corps officer, The Salvation Army of Greensboro, with projects funded by United Way of Greater Greensboro. "With enthusiasm, the FedEx Cares teams have demonstrated enduring goodness, which is an essential element in transforming peoples' lives."
After breakfast, the teams will continue their work, a first for Greensboro, as part of FedEx's five-year old FedEx Cares' global community service initiative.
During past week The Salvation Army facilities, teams of FedEx volunteers sorted clothes and items at the Family Store, served meals at the Center Hope shelter to success, painted the Army's multipurpose room and a "spread the love" in a much needed mulch application at the Central unit, Boys & Girls Clubs.
"We have two very important partners coming together in an effort to meet critical needs in our community," said Keith Barsuhn, president, United Way of Greater Greensboro. "Fed Ex has long been known as an outstanding corporate citizen with a history of generous individual giving. There's never been a more meaningful time for The Salvation Army of Greensboro's work; especially as we think about the increased demand for emergency assistance."
Daily in the Piedmont, The Salvation Army's eight corps perform more than 2,000 acts of caring (feeding, clothing, housing, youth development), establishing itself as the largest private, nongovernmental social services organization.
At the breakfast Rally, Joe Stephens, FedEx managing director of Air-Ground & Freight Services in Virginia-Carolinas region for FedEx Express, will discuss corporate responsibility and his company's business and community service commitment to Greensboro and the region. Other scheduled speakers are Keith Barsuhn, United Way of Greater Greensboro and Major Egan.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LETTER CARRIERS - ANNUAL FOOD DRIVE
Every second Saturday in May letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns across America deliver much more than mail when they walk and drive along their postal routes. They also collect the goodness and compassion of their postal customers who participate in the NALC Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive - the largest one-day food drive in the nation and probably the world.
The effort by letter carriers represented by the National Association of Letter Carriers (AFL-CIO), with the help of rural letter carriers, other postal employees and numerous other volunteers has resulted in delivery of nearly one billion pounds of donations to community food banks and pantries over the past 16 years.
This year it was held on Saturday, May 9, 2009. The Salvation Army Youth Group R.A.W, a HS Marine ROTC, and some individual volunteers met at a collection site on West Market Street; unloading the Letter Carrier's trucks, sorting items and loading them into a trailer. Some of the volunteers cooked hot dogs and hamburgers to feed the letter carriers lunch. The R.A.W. Youth Group provided baked goods for dessert.
