Giving Tuesday

Building Smiles.

Since 1981, as a Service Center for the three first years and as a Corps from the fourth year on, the Salvation Army has been active in Hernando County doing what it does best - serving people.

The beauty of the Suncoast combined with wonderful residents cannot hide a painful reality; there are people in need! That is where we (Officers, Soldiers, Volunteers, and Donors) band together to do our part - meet needs.

Why do we do it? Because we know the value of a smile; a smile on the face of a child when he or she receives a Christmas gift that without the work of the Salvation Army, would never receive; a smile on the face of an elderly person when visited by a Soldier or a Volunteer in one of the nursing homes in our community.

If you read our Brand Promise (DOING THE MOST GOOD®) with skepticism, we assure you that we are not bragging, but it is just the promise made by those who are committed with passion to do something for those who need it.

We will continue doing it; we are committed to building smiles; we know what needs to be done and we know why.

May God bless you all!

With an increase of almost 20% over last year's fundraising, our 2012 Red Kettle Campaign was very successful. In the middle of the Campaign, an anonymous donor dropped a gold coin with an estimated value of $415.00 in our Kettle at the Sam's Club on Cortez Blvd.

The Angel Tree Program was equally successful. In general, the quality of the donations (toys and clothes) were outstanding! 565 children from 229 families received a bag with several toys and clothes. It was a blessing for those who received the Angel Tree bags, those who donated, and for workers and volunteers who participated in the distribution.

Thanksgiving Basket Distribution was also another opportunity to allow 287 families to have a decent Thanksgiving dinner despite their current financial situation. As in 2011, we reached our goal of offering one whole frozen turkey to each registered family.

Our list of Donors, Sponsors, Helpers is huge. To all of them: THANK YOU!!!

Holiday Assistance

Our Holiday Assistance Application period has come to a close. We have signed up 235 families with a total of 891 people for this year's Holiday Assistance. We will be distributing Thanksgiving Food Baskets and Christmas Toys to families in need.

If you missed the regular period for signups, do not panic! We will have one MAKEUP DAY, October 23rd, from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm, and 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm. If you wish to apply, you must come to our office before October 23rd and ask for an invitation to the Makeup Day. Those who do not bring an invitation on October 23rd will not be able to apply.

Less than 100 spots are left. Come to our office as soon as possible if you still wish to apply!

We hope to reach over 300 families this year. Please spread the word to anyone who may be in need during the 2012 Holiday season!

Fall Festival

The Salvation Army is inviting you to attend to our FALL FESTIVAL, on Saturday October 20, from 9:00 am through 3:00 pm.

First Annual Golf Tournament.

The Salvation Army in Hernando County is preparing our First Annual Golf Tournament. The Organizing Committee convened at the end of August, and they are working on the details. If you like Golf and enjoy helping us help people in need, this event is just for you! We will update the information frequently. No tentative date is decided yet, but it will be definitively on Spring 2013.

Special Food Distribution.

The Salvation Army Social Service Office is having Special Food Distributions every Tuesday from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM (with a 30 minutes lunch break at noon). The supply will not always be the same, but low income families from the whole county can receive food bags with frozen chicken, frozen potato wedges, frozen french fries, fresh tomatoes, fresh potatoes; and a variety of canned goods such as corn, mixed vegetables, etc. If you know families who really need it, please do not hesitate to share this information with them.

Annual Volunteers' Appreciation Lunch.

The Salvation Army in Hernando County honored the Volunteers and Partners who were helping during 2011 through the Annual Volunteers' Appreciation Lunch, held at Silverthorne Country Club on February 16, 2012.
