Released 1 June 2012

There's a hole lotta happy going in. The first Friday in June is National Donut Day!

Started by the Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938, the day honors the Army's 'Donut Lassies' who served treats and provided assistance to soldiers on the front lines during World War 1. To honor the 75th anniversary of Donut Day, the Salvation Army is teaming up with Entenmann's Bakery in New York to make the largest box of donuts ever created.

If you can't make it to the NYC celebrations, be sure to stop by your local Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme, which are also participating in the festivities. Dunkin is offering a free donut with any beverage purchase, and Krispy Kreme is offering a free donut of any variety. Or you can celebrate your local independent donut shop.

This fried confection comes in so many flavors you're sure to find one you love. What's your favorite type and equally importantly - how do you spell it, and what do you drink with it?
