Released 10 May 2013

KNOXVILLE, TENN. - May 10, 2013 - Every May, The Salvation Army celebrates those in the community who serve as the foundation for its mission of helping the needy. This year, The Salvation Army's Knoxville Area Command has several events scheduled during National Salvation Army Week to honor those who support the organization. Additionally, some events will also be held to support those who rely on The Salvation Army for help.

"It's a special week for The Salvation Army and the community," says Area Commander Major Albert Villafuerte. "It is impossible for us show all our gratitude towards everyone who supports us throughout the year in just one week, but it's the least we can do to acknowledge their contributions."

Beginning in 1954, November 18 - December 4 was declared by the United Stated Congress and proclaimed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to be the first National Salvation Army Week. Today, the dates have changed, but the work of The Salvation Army that was recognized has not - to serve those in need without discrimination.

During his presidency, Dwight D. Eisenhower stated, "Among Americans, The Salvation Army has long been a symbol of wholehearted dedication to the cause of brotherhood. In time of war, the men and women of this organization have brought to those serving their country far from home, friendliness and warm concern. In the quieter days of peace, their work has been a constant reminder to us all that each of us is neighbor and kin to all Americans, giving freely of themselves, the men and women of The Salvation Army have won the respect of all."
