KNOXVILLE, TENN. - April 9, 2013 - With the U.S. Census Bureau now rating almost half of all Americans in the poor or low-income categories, The Salvation Army nationwide continues to see heavy demand for food relief. The Knoxville Area is no exception as more and more of our neighbors are reaching the end of their savings and desperately need help.

"We're not feeding statistics, we're feeding people," explains Area Commander Major Albert Villafuerte.  "We need $25,000 to keep our food pantry stocked for the next six to nine months.  Our regulars are now being joined by the formerly middle-class, a group that's just begun to embrace a nightmare they probably thought they'd never see - no money for food.  With foreclosures and costs rising, not to mention the effects of recession, times are hard for many in our community."

Unfortunately, this phenomenon coincides with a seasonal low in Salvation Army food pantry supplies.  "We've used up our holiday donations feeding people through the holidays and beyond," said Villafuerte "We need a new influx of support."

"The Salvation Army served more than 60,000,000 meals to those in need across the nation.  This year, we expect to provide just as many, if not more meals to hungry men, women and children. Additionally, we provide grants for rent, utility assistance, medicine and food for more than 20,000 individuals in desperate need. Last year, the Knoxville Area Command served over 62,000 meals and distributed over 1,400 food boxes."

"The Salvation Army has always served the neediest and we will continue to respond to cries for help from those who need it most," added Villafuerte. "But we depend on the support of the community to do our work.  We urge our friends to make a gift so we can help those who are hurting most of all."
