Released 31 October 2009
Jackson, Miss – As residents of the northwest
Louisiana continue cleaning up after Thursday’s storms
moved through the metro Shreveport/ Bossier area, Salvation Army volunteers and
staff are providing snacks and meals in hardest hit neighborhoods in the
Haughton/Red Chutt area near Shreveport throughout the day on Friday.
“We (The Salvation Army) want residents cleaning
up after the
storm to be able to focus on the task at hand, cleaning up and getting back to
normal,” said Major Mark Smith, Corps Officer for The Salvation Army in
Shreveport.
“Our goal is
to take at least one more burden off the backs of those cleaning up after the
storm.”
Services will continue as long as needed throughout
northwest
Louisiana.
The Salvation Army will be distributing home clean-up
kits
and tarps to residents affected by flooding and tornadoes, once it is safe for
families to return to their home. Clean
up kits include: mop, bucket, squeegee, broom, towels, and cleaning fluids.
Clean-up kits are an important tool in minimizing the costly effects that water
damage can have on a structure.
With more strong storms expected to crawl across
northern Louisiana and Mississippi on Friday,
The Salvation Army has placed 32 feeding units on standby. In
addition, The Salvation Army’s new Disaster Warehouse in Jackson has deployed
resources to areas
already affected by the heavy rains and tornadic activity.
Donations are needed to offset the costs of services to
storm
victims in Northwest Louisiana. Please visit
www.salvationarmyalm.org or call
1-800-SAL-ARMY to donate. All donations for disaster services will be used for
the designated purpose.
