Institute, WV: The Salvation Army’s Charleston and Huntington, WV canteens (mobile kitchens) were deployed to Institute, WV following an explosion at a Bayer Crop Science plant. The explosion sent a fireball hundreds of feet into the air and could be felt miles away. It happened just before 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening. Food and water was served by the Salvation Army to firefighters, paramedics and law enforcement. The canteens stayed on site until 5:30 a.m. Thursday morning when the fire was extinguished.
One worker was killed and a second injured in the explosion. The injured worker is in a Pittsburgh hospital being treated for burns. A company emergency responder was treated at the scene for heat stress.
