Christmas can be a particularly difficult time of year for many people in the community. It is at this time of year especially that the indigent and frail face the greatest hardships. The Salvation Army's Christmas Programs were created to help families in need during the holiday season. The Army helps to ensure that no child goes without a Christmas. These services and are provided in addition to all of the programs offered throughout the year. To volunteer for any of the programs below, please call Stacey Killingsworth at (251) 438-1625.
Angel Tree
The Salvation Army identifies many needy families through registration process. Each Angel Tree family is interviewed by a Salvation Army representative or volunteers and must meet certain guidelines to qualify for assistance.
Through the Angel Tree Program the community gets directly involved. They are able to select their own "Angel" and purchase Christmas gifts for them.
Red Kettles
The Red Kettles Program collects public contributions in kettles throughout the community. The donations enable The Salvation Army to bring the spirit of Christmas to people who would otherwise be forgotten. The Salvation Army's message -- "Doing the Most Good" -- still supports this timeless, enduring program.
The Red Kettle Campaign begins on November 13th and continues through December 24th. The Salvation Army is looking for community, civic and church groups to take a day (or more) at one of the Kettle locations and ring the bell for us. If interested, please call Major Ted Morris at (251) 438-1625 to check for availability of dates and locations.
Holiday Meals
Every Thanksgiving and Christmas Day The Salvation Army provides a traditional hot and hearty meal to the public. Meals are served from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day. All are welcome! To volunteer for either holiday, please call Stacey Killingsworth at (251) 438-1625 to make a reservation.
Spirit of Giving
NBC 15 sponsors a food and toy drive each year. The items collected are used to supplement The Salvation Army's Christmas programs. Along with the drive, NBC 15 hosts a live broadcast featuring talent from all over Mobile and Baldwin Counties as well as Pensacola, Florida.
Press-Register's Neediest Family
The Neediest Families program is an extended assistance program for qualified families in crisis. Families are highlighted throughout the Christmas season in The Press-Register. The Press-Register also highlights donors who provide funding to the program. The Salvation Army distributes the needed items to the participating families.
