On July 10th 2009, the Salvation Army kicked off the Beat the Heat program to provide assistance to those who needed relief from the record high temperatures reported this summer.
The program was designed to:
- Provide 20” boxed fans
- Provide A.C. Units for people with medical conditions
- Bill pay assistance
The program was available for residents of Hidalgo County who met the following requirements
Fans:
- Photo Identification
- Proof of income
- Last paycheck if unemployed
AC Unit
- Photo Identification
- Proof of income
- Last paycheck if unemployed
- Letter from doctor stating medical condition and a need for the AC unit
With the help of CPL, Shell Oil, KGBT Chan. 4 and others The Salvation Army was able to provide more than 660 fans and 50 AC units for residents of Hidalgo County. The program also helped 56 families/individuals with electrical bill assistance totaling $14,268.43.
