Nashville, TN - The Mother Daughter Serving Circle, volunteering on behalf of Project ReDesign, did a transformation on The Salvation Army's Center of Hope Transitional Housing Single Women's Suites on Saturday, February 26th at The Salvation Army Center located at 631 Dickerson Pike, Nashville, TN 37207. Eight Single Women's suites in The Salvation Army's transitional housing program received a complete makeover which included new colorful bedroom sheet and comforter sets, towel sets, toiletry baskets, table lamps, pictures for the walls, decorations, closet organizers with hangers and laundry baskets and more to brighten up the dorm-like spaces.
The Single Women's suites at The Salvation Army Center of Hope are designed to provide a home for women who have lost everything and need some help getting back on their feet, transitioning out of homelessness and into permanent independent housing. Women can stay in this program for up to 2 years, are assigned a case manager, and provided Life Skills classes to educate them with budgeting, job preparedness, GED preparation and more.
The Salvation Army Transitional Housing suites have been in much need of some updating. A year ago, Major Janine Vincent, The Salvation Army Women's Coordinator, created the Home Sweet Home program which benefits residents living in the Center of Hope transitional housing that serves homeless individuals and families in Nashville. Major Janine Vincent explains, "When a new resident moves in, we want to be able to provide them with things that would give them a little piece of home."
Karen Moore of Project ReDesign explained, "We heard about The Salvation Army's Home Sweet Home program and it was an instant marriage at first site. Project ReDesign's mission fit right in with what The Salvation Army's needs were. Our goal is to brighten up spaces for disadvantaged single women and families. When we took a tour of the Center of Hope at The Salvation Army we were destined to take on this project."
The first phase of the remodel began with Project ReDesign's makeover of the Single Women's Lounge. This past weekend the single women's units will be completed. Over the course of this year, Project ReDesign hopes to move onto the family suites and lounge upstairs at The Salvation Army's Center of Hope.
Project ReDesign depends on donations and partnerships from outside parties to create their remodels. For this specific project at The Salvation Army Center of Hope, the Mother Daughter Serving Circle stepped up to do the shopping and provide the volunteer man-power to take on all eight single women's suites. Melinda Perry of the Mother Daughter Serving Circle explained, "We had a great experience serving The Salvation Army Angel Tree program doing sort, bag and tag of the angels' gifts, that when we heard about this volunteer opportunity with Project ReDesign and The Salvation Army, we knew it would be a perfect hands-on project for our moms and daughters to take on and to make a real difference in the lives of the women being served in the program."
Various anonymous donors have contributed to funding the remodel of the suites in the transitional housing program in addition to various volunteer groups that are lined up to work several volunteer hours on each phase of the redesign.

About The Salvation Army Transitional Housing Program
The Salvation Army Transitional Housing is a program where 13 families, 8 single women, and 20 single men can work, complete school or job training and receive counseling. The program helps individuals move from homelessness and crisis to permanent housing and self-sufficiency. Project Redesign is an incentive-based program providing room "redesigns" for deserving families, helping them with their lifestyle and interior spaces. We also help families in immediate crisis, partially or fully furnishing their apartments.
Our committee collects donations of gently-used household items and furniture, gift certificates, or cash. All contributions are tax deductible through The Salvation Army. Receipts and pick-up are provided.
The Mother Daughters Serving Circle of Nashville, is a group of moms and daughters who are from various churches in the community who join together to learn about the needs of the community, take part in hands-on service opportunities and learn biblical understandings of giving.
