At Peace

Charles had a great life. He came from a good family. He was a top athlete in high school and college. He had a career in publishing and worked as V.P. of Advertising Sales for a national magazine, owned by his father. Charles is also an addict and in recovery.
“When I went out West to college, I played ball on scholarship. I was very popular, a good student. During the off season, I smoked marijuana,” says Charles. “I wanted to fit-in. Besides, I was using strictly on a recreational basis. Looking back, I know it kept me from playing pro sports.
“I came back to D.C. in 1986 after graduating with a BA in Sociology. I had a great job at a PR firm, joined my dad’s company, got very successful at what I was doing. Had lots of friends. And then I started snorting cocaine. I felt I could handle it.”
Since then, Charles has been in and out of three rehabs, was free-basing, then smoking crack. He lived in the streets in abandoned cars. This star athlete, business executive, and loving father and friend hit bottom. Charles did not know himself anymore and even lost years of his life. He couldn’t remember one year from another or one relationship from another.
Charles came to Harbor Light just last November and is about to celebrate his three-month anniversary.
“The difference for me, between Harbor Light and other rehabs, is Harbor Light stresses spirituality. I have never been so aware of God being in my life. It keeps me focused on me and my recovery,” Charles smiles. “I now have peace and serenity, things I haven’t felt for a long, long time.”
We congratulate Charles on his anniversary of sobriety –– something made possible, says Charles, “by letting God lead me to Harbor Light.”
