Angel Tree registrations under way

Low-income families can start registering with The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma Area Command for toys, food and possibly clothing for the Christmas season.
Registration for the assistance, is being offered for children 14 and younger, qualified seniors and the disabled at the Area Command, located at 311 SW 5th St..
Those families seeking to include children on the Angel Tree must register by appointment only by calling 405-246-1078 or 405-246-1134. Applications will NOT be accepted on a walk-in basis.
Caseworkers are accepting appointment calls on an ongoing basis and the registrations will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 2 to 6.
Persons applying must reside in Oklahoma County, have a picture ID, have Social Security cards or legal documents for all household members, income or no income verification, verification of SSI/SSA/SSD disability income (if applicable), proof of residency and proof of expenses.
Families should also bring information like clothing sizes and two toy requests per child.
This year, the Angel Tree registration will serve 12 people every 15 minutes, up from the 10 per 15 minutes in 2008.
"Of course, we've added more people. The need is there," said Toni Sanders, director of Social Services and Disaster Services for The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma. "Our services have increased tremendously across the board, and we anticipate Christmas needs will be no different."
The Christmas Gift Program is for children ages 0 to 14 and eligible senior citizens ages 62 and older. Those who have signed up for Christmas assistance with another agency cannot sign up for The Salvation Army's program. Do not bring children to the appointment.

* DONATE USED GIFT CARDS Unused amounts left on Christmas gift cards can be put to good use by donating those cards with remaining balances to The Salvation Army.

For instance, if a person had a $25 gift card and now has $2.08 left on it, The Salvation Army can use that $2.08 to help local families in need. It doesn't matter what store the gift card is from or how much is left on it. The Salvation Army can convert the remaining balance to cash to serve those in the community who need assistance. All cards - used and unused - will help.

Residents are urged to check their wallet, purse, dresser drawers, car and wherever gift cards are stashed and drop them off at The Salvation Army Oklahoma City Metropolitan Area Command, 311 SW 5th St., Oklahoma City, OK 73101.
