Team Lands In Haiti
The Salvation Army’s initial assessment team landed in Haiti at Cape
Haitian last night and is on their way to the capital city
Port-au-Prince!
Major Tom Louden and his team drove three hours Thursday night on
treacherous roads severely damaged by the earthquake, saying their car
shook constantly as they could only travel on average up to 20mph on
the torn up streets.
They reported having to dodge holes in the road the size of “semi
trucks,” trying carefully not to get too close to the edge of the
cliffs where there were no guard rails for protection.

Salvation Army Mobilizing Personnel, Resources to Aid with Haiti Relief
Army school, clinic damaged; staff on-site organizing emergency response
Alexandria, VA (January 13, 2010) - The Salvation
Army is mobilizing resources and personnel to assist with the
international relief effort in Haiti following a severe earthquake
Tuesday that damaged much of the country's infrastructure, housing and
commercial buildings.
The Salvation Army has had a presence in Haiti since 1950 and
currently operates schools, clinics, a hospital, feeding programs,
children's homes and church-related activities spread across two major
facilities in Port au Prince, close to the epicenter of the earthquake
and at other locations in the country.
One of the facilities, or compounds as it is referred to, includes a
home for more than 50 children; a school with a daily attendance of
1,500 children; a medical clinic caring for 150-200 people daily; and a
church that on any typical Sunday welcomes nearly 1,000 people. The
facility is less than 10 minutes from the National Palace and is in an
area known as St. Martin that's home to predominantly poor living in
the nation's capital.

The Salvation Army Responds to Haiti Earthquake
THE Salvation Army responded immediately to the earthquake in
Port-au-Prince, capital of Haiti, which caused extensive damage to
buildings and significant loss of life. Communication is proving difficult, with telephone lines down, but news
received from The Salvation Army’s Caribbean Territory indicates that
considerable damage was done to Army property in the city. The
divisional headquarters, the divisional commander’s house and the
children’s home were all badly damaged. The home of Emergency
Coordinator Bob Poff was totally destroyed but Bob and his wife,
Vivienne, are safe. Of great concern in the hours after the earthquake was the fact that a
number of children from the Salvation Army children’s home were
unaccounted for. It was not initially clear whether they were in the
home when the earthquake struck or they had not yet returned from
school. Latest reports say that all but one of the home's 52 children
has now been found.
