VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR 2008
The Bay County Salvation Army's annual Volunteer of the Year Award is usually given to a deserving individual who is recognized for his or her outstanding service and volunteerism. This year, the recipient was an organization, Gulf Coast Medical Center.
Salvation Army Captain Dwayne Durham said, "We faced extraordinary challenges in 2008. Whenever we put out the call for help, Gulf Coast Medical Center responded quickly and in force. Their employees not only provided much needed financial resources, but they provided manpower as well. We want to let them know we recognize their commitment and sacrifice."
During the Salvation Army's recent banquet to honor volunteers, attendees learned Gulf Coast Medical Center employees helped resupply the food pantry; bought items for women in the Domestic Violence Shelter; bought Christmas gifts for children in the Angel Tree project; and served as bell ringers.
Hospital President and CEO Brian Baumgardner said, "It is a privilege to help the Salvation Army. The work they do touches the lives of thousands of people in our community every day. Through their services they give hope, shelter, and comfort to individuals and families. We are only a small part in the extraordinary work of the Salvation Army."
Captain Durham expressed sincere appreciation to The Panama City News Herald, Tommy Thomas Chevrolet and individual donors for a record-breaking $217,614 raised through the Empty Stocking Fund in 2008.
A Fashion Show featuring clothing purchased at the Thrift Store was emcee by Logan Kirksey of Sunny 98.5. Special guests of the evening were former Salvation Army Southern Territorial leaders Commissioners Raymond and Merlyn Cooper who presented a musical history of The Salvation Army. The evening ended with "I Am The Candle of The Lord", a slide presentation accompanied by a song of the same title written by Major Joy Webb that reminded attendees that we are light in a dark world.

By clicking here you can, at your own leisure, look to see what times and locations are available for bellringing. In the Fall of 2009 we will be completing the bellringing schedule so that volunteers can register themselves to ring. Please check back then to register.
Thank you for giving. God Bless You!

The Salvation Army is at work in these counties seeking to make a difference in thousands of lives. We pledge to do the most good with every resource given to us.
- Providing bags filled with groceries to feed hungry families.
- Paying a utility or house/rent payment to keep a family from being out on the street.
- Providing affordable apartments for families seeking to get back on their feet.
- Working with people that are required by the courts to make restitution for a poor choice they've made.
- Providing a safe haven for victims of domestic violence.
These are just some of the ways we are meeting needs in our area. We also give opportunity to the community to purchase affordable used clothing, furniture, appliances, houseware, electronics, toys, and much more. The proceeds of these sales are used to fund the programs and services previously mentioned.
