waliThe Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club Hosts Former NBA Great Wali Jones

Recently, The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club welcomed special guest Wali Jones. Jones, a former NBA player for the championship Philadelphia 76'ers and current Miami Heat Community Affairs Liaison, stopped by the Club to share his thoughts and experiences with the youth enrolled in the Club's C.O.O.L. Summer Camp.

Jones spent an hour sharing his life experiences and discussing the importance of an academic work plan for those who had an interest in playing sports.

"His unique workshop inspired many and provoked many candid questions from the summer Club members who were in attendance," said Hugh Jones, Executive Director of The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club.

"He challenged them to be realistic about what it takes to succeed in athletics and how competitive it is playing sports professionally."

The youth in attendance, ages 10 and up, were also shown footage of Jones' highlights with the various teams he played for as well as his youth-based community outreach. The Club members were also shown his championship ring.

"We ended the workshop by having each member give some thoughts to their own academic work plan and writing it down on paper to prepare for the upcoming school year," Hugh Jones said.

After the workshop, the members spent an hour in the gym running basketball skill drills and competitions with one another as Jones reiterated how discipline, hard work and continual practice is needed to be successful.

"It made for a great and memorable day for all in attendance and Wali even gave out Miami Heat paraphernalia to the members for their participation in the workshop."

"He even told them that in his eyes, ‘everyone was a winner today.'"
