Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club Holds
5th Annual Community Day and Open House
Earlier this spring, nearly 400 people attended The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club's 5th Annual Community Day and Open House. This free event is held every spring to promote community and family pride among Church Hill residents in an effort to reclaim the community and its youth from violence, gangs and drugs by showing them that there are positive role models and alternatives.
This event featured numerous performances, and fun activities for children and families, including; the finals of "Club Idol;" free health screening provided by Bon Secours; child finger printing by the Richmond Sheriff's Department; and all All-Star basketball game featuring the best Club players as chosen from The Club's Intra-Club Basketball League.
Numerous local church step and dance teams as well as the Franklin Military Color Guard Squad, Drill Team, Step Team participated in this year's event.
"Club Idol" highlighted the two finalists from a Clubwide search that was held earlier in the year; 8-year old Club member Gary Lewis and 13-year old Club member Landon Griffin. After each performed, Kenny Randolph, a proud supporter and friend of The Club, announced that Lewis had been selected as the 2009 winner.
For the fifth straight year, Club alumnae and Henrico County Sheriff, Antoinette Irving continued her support of this event and secured many of the entertainment, the moon bounce, air rides and even an appearance by Sponge Bob Square Pants - which was a huge hit with the young boys and girls in attendance.
