The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club Nominates Youth of the Year
The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club recently named Kiarra R. McCullough as its nominee for Youth of the Year, an award that recognizes a young person's outstanding contributions to their family, school, community and Club, as well as personal challenges and obstacles they may have overcome to achieve success.
McCullough, an 11th grader at Highland Springs High School in Henrico County, is a three sport varsity athlete excelling in basketball, soccer and volleyball. When not in school, she volunteers her time at Brookhaven Rest Home where she enjoys playing bingo with the elderly residents on a weekly basis. She also regularly spends her Sunday afternoons preparing and distributing home-cooked meals to the homeless.
McCullough also spent time in 2007 volunteering on the campaign to elect Delegate Joseph D. Morrissey.
"Kiarra is hard working, diligent and has what I call stick-to-it-tiveness," Morrisey said. "I can think of no person more deserving of this honor."
McCullough, an active member of The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club for the last 7 years, hopes to attend either Old Dominion University or Bowie State upon graduation and dreams of one day becoming a police officer.
She is extremely active in the club's activities, such as; SAT Prep Classes, Back to Basics, Etiquette Classes, Baby Think it Over, the in-house basketball league and the Summer Day Camp.
In a recent essay in which McCullough wrote about her experiences at the Club, she stated;
"When I go to the club I can be myself. I don't have to put on "airs" or try to please anyone. It doesn't matter if I'm having issues in school, with my social life, or just life in general; I know that there is always someone at the club who can help me out five days a week."
Reverend June F. Rice, Minister of Christian Education at Cedar Street Baptist Church of God, wrote about McCullough in a letter of reference for her Youth of the Year nomination that, "she exemplifies dedication and determination to her academic endeavors, employment and each of her athletic activities...I have no doubt she would be an asset to any organization and is deserving of aforementioned title (Youth of the Year)."
