kettleRed Kettle Campaign Exceeds Goal; Volunteerism at Kettles Vital to Success

The Salvation Army Central Virginia's Red Kettle Campaign, which ended on Christmas Eve, raised over $460,640, surpassing its goal of $335,000.

"We kicked off this year's campaign with the 36 hours of continuous music at a Red Kettle, and the momentum and buzz that event created lasted the entire campaign," said Jeff Baldwin, Public Relations Director for The Salvation Army Central Virginia.

"This community is simply amazing, and each and every year they rise to the challenge and donate at the Red Kettle."

For the first time in recent memory, The Salvation Army received a non-traditional donation at a Red Kettle when someone anonymously donated two diamond rings and a diamond earring at a kettle stationed outside the Kroger in Mechanicsville.

"To receive such a unique donation really made us all smile here at Area Command."

The jewelry has an estimated value of over $600.

In addition to the numerous physical Red Kettle locations, The Salvation Army Central Virginia once again offered donors an opportunity to give online, quickly and conveniently from the comfort of their home via an Online Red Kettle.

"Every year, the Online Red Kettle component grows, and the future looks bright."

Over $13,000 was donated via the online Red Kettle, nearly $4,000 more than 2010 and the Online Red Kettle remains active through January 31st.

"Volunteers are crucial to the success of the Red Kettles each and every year, and this past campaign was no exception."

More than 5,330 hours were donated by individuals in the community at a Red Kettle from November 11 through December 24.

"We had musicians, civic groups, moms and dads, media personalities, Board members, businesses and citizens out at Red Kettles this year and we can't thank them enough for their time and support!"
