Richmond Area Command Initiates
Disaster Emergency Response Team (DERT)
This summer, The Salvation Army Richmond Area Command installed a new concept within its Emergency Disaster Services program. This concept, DERT, is a slightly new focus for the Richmond Area Command.
"We are looking to build and enhance our ability to respond locally to emergency situations," said Captain David Worthy, Richmond Area Commander.
The Salvation Army's Emergency Disaster Services team received its initial DERT training on a sunny afternoon in August. This training focused primarily on the operation of the Area Command's larger response unit, or canteen (mobile kitchen).
This training also afforded Captain Worthy an opportunity to share his vision for disaster response with the team.
These canteens are mobile kitchens with the ability to respond to the needs of the community should a disaster occur.
The DERT concept was formed in 1992 following Hurricane Andrew in the Florida Division of The Salvation Army under Captain David Worthy, and he has brought his knowledge and background in disaster services, along with DERT, to the Richmond area.
In addition, Ben Pennington, Richmond Area Command's Director of Disaster Services, recently visited and learned from the DERT in Pittsburgh, PA.
"Pittsburgh has the finest Salvation Army local response program in the country, and we plan on mirroring some of their ideas here to serve the Central Virginia community in times of crisis," said Captain Worthy.
