The Salvation Army has been serving those in need in Petersburg and the Tri-Cities area since 1888 and its programs include:

Christmas Assistance:

The Army celebrates the holidays each year by providing gifts to children and individuals in need.

In 2009-2010, Petersburg assisted 1,154 individuals during the Christmas season with toys, clothing and other items.

Emergency Shelter Services:

The Salvation Army provides  emergency housing for single men who are homeless at the shelter located at 835 Commerce Street in Petersburg. The emergency shelter houses 26 beds.  Men participate in a case plan designed to help them become self-sufficient. This case plan varies with each individual, but includes finding and keeping a job, improving literacy and education, substance abuse prevention, interpersonal skills and budgeting.

The shelter also houses 22 beds for single men in the transitional housing program.  These men have a more detailed case plan and can remain in the program for up to two years. The men are expected to maintain steady employment and to save money towards obtaining permanent housing.

In 2009-2010, 810 men stayed at the emergency shelter; and 27,278 meals were served.

Family Services Programs:

Provides food, clothing and financial assistance for rent/mortgage and utility payments to those on the brink of homelessness and hunger.

In 2009-2010, 3,855 individuals were served through the Family Services Program in Petersburg and Hopewell.

Emergency Disaster Services:

Provides compassion, food, clothing, medical supplies and more to victims and emergency workers of natural or manmade disaster through its ‘mobile kitchen' or ‘canteen' units.

The Community Education Center:

The goal of the Center is to produce dramatic improvements in the areas of scholastic performance, child and adult literacy, employment and additional life-skills training.  The Center will serve as a home for collaboration with the localities of Petersburg, Prince George, Hopewell, Colonial Heights, and Dinwiddie.  The Center will also serve as a resource for these local governments and other non-profit agencies in the Tri-Cities where individuals may be referred and will receive the individualized attention and case management to meet their particular educational and resource needs.
