Every year, The Salvation Army in Central Virginia runs several programs that work together to provide Christmas Assistance to thousands of children in the Richmond metro and Tri-Cities region. These programs are:

angel_treeThe Salvation Army / NBC 12 Angel Tree program, in partnership with NBC 12, makes available to the community thousands of angels to adopt. Each angel represents an under-privileged child who without the support of the community would not have a Christmas. Members of the community choose angels from trees displayed at area malls and corporations. These donors adopt the angels by providing new clothing and gifts for their Christmas.

Angels will be available for adoption at area retail locations from Monday, November 11th through Wednesday, December 11th.

Angel Trees will be manned Monday-Saturday from 10:00AM to 9:00PM (with the exception of Thanksgiving Day) and on Sundays from 1:00PM to 6:00PM

Please DO NOT wrap your gifts and return all items to the location where you selected the tag no later than Wednesday, December 11th at 9:00PM

Christmas_MotherThe Richmond Times-Dispatch Christmas Mother Fund raises money to provide needy children with gifts and toys. Each year an individual is selected from the community to represent the newspaper as the Richmond Christmas Mother. Donations are collected in her name and given to The Salvation Army for the purchase of food and toys for needy children.

fox_socksFOX Holiday Socks, a joint venture with FOX Richmond, encourages members of the community to pick up empty stockings from the Army and fill them with toys for the children.

Empty stockings are available at all Dr. Baxter Perkinson & Associates Family Dentistry & Orthodontics locations. All filled stockings must be returned to The Salvation Army, FOX Richmond, or Dr. Baxter Perkinson & Associates Family Dentistry & Orthodontics, Village Bank or any participating Papa Johns by no later than Wednesday, December 11th.

coatsCoats for Kids, sponsored by Puritan Cleaners, collects donated new or used winter coats through Puritan Cleaners outlet throughout the holiday season. Puritan cleans and repairs the coats, at no cost, and delivers them to The Salvation Army to be given to needy families.

The program, which began in 1988, has raised over 250,000 coats for under-privileged families.

kettleThe Red Kettle Campaign, sponsored by WTVR CBS 6, supports the social service programs of The Salvation Army throughout the year. Individuals and community groups volunteer to ring bells at various kettle locations in the area. Visitors are invited to drop a donation into the kettle.

The 2011 Red Kettle Campaign kicks off on Friday, November 11th and will run every day, with the exception of Sundays and Thanksgiving Day, until Christmas Eve.

cheer_gearHoliday Cheer and Gear began in 2007 when ESPN Radio 950 partnered with The Salvation Army to encourage the community and ESPN Radio listeners to donate new sporting goods of all kinds for The Salvation Army to distribute to its tweens and teens through its Christmas Assistance Programs.

The Salvation Army's Silver Bells program is similar to the Angel Tree program with the difference being that senior citizens in designated nursing homes are adopted by residents in the community. The Silver Bells, who might not otherwise have a Christmas, are provided items, such as clothing and toiletries.
