Richmond Salvation Army
Launches Online Red Kettle

The Richmond Salvation Army is excited to once again launch its Online Red Kettle Campaign - a program that allows those in the Central Virginia community an opportunity to donate from the comfort of their own home.

This online program allows those interested to host their very own personal virtual Red Kettle, and encourages them to invite their friends, associates, and family to donate to those in need through this innovative and exciting initiative.

"The Christmas season is a time of year when the generosity and compassion of the Richmond community really shines brightly," said Captain David Worthy, Richmond Area Commander, "and we sincerely hope that this online component of the Red Kettle will allow us to help meet the increased demand for assistance."

"By joining and contributing to the Online Red Kettle, you will be Doing the Most Good right here in your community."

All the funds raised will be used by The Salvation Army to help those in need; people in desperate need of a hot meal, warm bed, encouraging word and/or financial assistance.

SMARTBOX to Continue Partnership with
The Salvation Army at Christmas

smartboxFor the fourth consecutive year, SMARTBOX Portable Storage will partner with the Richmond Salvation Army throughout the Christmas season by providing, free of charge, its mobile storage units, SMARTBOXES.

These SMARTBOXES, and the coordination of their delivery and pick-up, will allow The Salvation Army and numerous Christmas partners to store donated items and have them delivered to The Salvation Army Christmas Center.

The programs that will benefit from this relationship include; The Salvation Army/NBC 12 Angel Tree program, FOX Holidays Socks and the Puritan Cleaner's Coats for Kids program.

In 2008, SMARTBOX provided nearly 25 portable storage units to The Salvation Army.

"We are extremely grateful for what SMARTBOX provides throughout the Christmas season, and their partnership over the years has made storing and transporting donated items easier than we could have ever imagined," said Captain David Worthy, Richmond Area Commander of The Salvation Army.

SMARTBOX Portable Self Storage, founded in 2002, is a Richmond-based company and is a premier provider of mobile storage.

The Salvation Army Still Serving More Individuals Than Ever...
Please Continue to Help us Meet the Needs of so Many!!

forecloseOver the last thirteen months, more than 3,800 individuals have received food assistance through The Salvation Army and the increased demand has left The Army's food pantry bare.

"We have always struggled keeping our food pantry stocked," said Jeff Baldwin, Public Relations Director for The Salvation Army Richmond Area Command, "but it's never been this difficult."

From September 2008 through Septmeber 2009, The Salvation Army's food pantry has handled more than 1,900 cases; an increase of 32% over the same time frame from the previous year. Of those served, 583 were families that had never received assistance of any kind from The Salvation Army.

"It continues to be an area of need in the community," Baldwin said.

In addition to the Food Pantry, The Salvation Army Richmond Area Command has coninuted to see an increased demand for its other social services, such as utility bill and rent/mortgage assistance.

In the last thirteen months, 1,236 individuals have received assitance with their utility bill (gas, oil or electric). This is a 54% increase over the same time period during the previous year.

Richmond Area Command has also seen a 49% increase in rent/mortgage assistance handling 260 cases during the last thirteen months.

"As companies conitnue to downsize or go out of business completely, we are noticing that families and individuals are being forced to make tough choices; deciding whether to pay that utility bill, rent or mortgage, or buying food to eat."

"We are doing all we can to meet the increased demand for our services, and we are confident that the Richmond community will step up and support The Salvation Army like never before, so that we can serve those individuals that are facing financial hardships for the first time."
