Released 16 April 2011

Jackson, MS – The Salvation Army of Jackson is on site at the incident command post located at the Clinton Big Lots and will be feeding tornado victims, emergency personnel and volunteers.

The mobile feeding unit is stocked to feed more than 500 people and will be on hand both Saturday and Sunday.

“The damage from this tornado is as bad as or even worse than what we saw in Yazoo City. The affected area is not as large but the severity of damage seems to be greater. There are so many homes that have sustained incredible damage. We are assessing the damage and putting a plan together to meet the material needs of these tornado victims,” said Captain Ken Chapman.

North East Jackson is being served hot meals out of our Presto Lane location through our Center of Hope shelter.

Captain Ken Chapman and the Jackson Corps are rotating between the two sites to insure that all tornado victims are served.

Communication towers have been affected by the storms and as a result Captain Chapman’s cell is not receiving calls. Call Becky Russell @ 601-397-2134 to coordinate interviews.

About The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army, an evangelical part of the universal Christian church established in 1865, has been supporting those in need in His name without discrimination for 130 years in the United States. Nearly 30 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through the broadest array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children. 82 cents of every dollar spent is used to carry out those services in 5,000 communities nationwide.
