The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary collects items for Salvation Army's homeless women and children shelter
(Ruth Burns, president-elect of The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary of Martin County, admires the many shower gifts presented by members at their Christmas luncheon for the Compassion House shelter that opens in January.)
The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary of Martin County held its Christmas luncheon at Renato's Italian Restaurant. The theme this year was a "Shower for Compassion House." After many years of planning and donations, this shelter opens in February as a safety net for homeless women and their children. Items "showered" for the shelter included books, toys, linens, diapers, under garments, socks, toiletries, detergents, car seats and other necessities.
The Women's Auxiliary meets the third Monday of each month, October through May, as many of our members are seasonal. We are testing "luncheon" meetings this year to better accommodate those who work. While we do not have regular meetings in those other months, we do gather to get children's packages ready for summer camp and back-packs for school. Our busiest time is the Christmas season when we put in many volunteer hours preparing for the Angel Tree and the subsequent distribution of food, toys and clothing for those in need here in Martin County. More than 1,500 children were serviced this Christmas.
We have two main fund raisers each year. One is a fashion show luncheon held in November and the other is a concert at the Lyric Theatre in Stuart. This year we have selected "Barrage," Thursday, March 8, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $75 and can be purchased from Nancy Davis, 12498 Harbour Ridge Blvd., Palm City, FL 34990. Your seat is reserved upon receipt of your check and tickets can be picked up at the box office after March 1.
If interested in attending a meeting or joining our auxiliary, please call The Salvation Army's main number 772-288-1471. We are also available to speak to church groups or business organizations. For more information about The Salvation Army or if you wish to join the Women's Auxiliary, ask for Lt. Andrea Hoover. To volunteer for The Salvation Army or to request a presentation, just ask for Mariel Broffman.
