During the 2008 holiday season, The Salvation Army served over 7,000 registered families with toys, clothing and food for Christmas, that was more than 30,000 individuals.  The food provided to these families typically comes in bulk and in many cases is donated; however, the continued economic downturn has hit everyone hard this year.

"Sure, we expect to have to buy some food to provide during Christmas distribution," said Major Lewis Reckline of The Salvation Army, "but this year we're looking at having to buy all the food, that's just not feasible."

During the summer months, The Salvation Army provided an average of 120 families a week with food, since September, that number has risen by approximately 20 families per week.

"We're doing all that we can to provide for the 140 families we see a week," said Seth Atkinson, Director of Social Services.  "In mid-December when see more than 7,000 families in one week, that's when we're really going to need help, and food."

During Christmas distribution, The Salvation Army provides each registered family to come through the depot with a food supplement.  "While our clients do understand that the food they're getting is a supplement, it's still our job to try and provide them with something of substance that can help feed their family," said Major Reckline.

The grocery list of the items and quantities that The Salvation Army needs in order to serve their clients this Christmas is below.  If you would like to help, either by donating money for the purchase of food or by holding a canned food drive at your school or business, please contact Stephanie Harris with The Salvation Army at (757) 581-2362 or stephanie_harris@uss.salvat ionarmy.org.  Additionally, canned food drives can be simply to raise one item (ie.
