Released 10 December 2008
Sam's Club of Waco is donating $1,000 to The Salvation Army of Waco, as well
as other local non-profit agencies, through their Annual Community Grant
Program on Wednesday, December 10th at 9:30 a.m. The oversized check
presentation will take place at the Sam's Club located 2301 East Waco Drive.
The Sam's Community Grant Program is the largest program funded by the
Wal-Mart and SAM'S CLUB Foundation and includes both matching and direct
grants.
The Matching Grant program allows local nonprofit organizations to hold
fundraisers outside their local Wal-Mart or SAM'S CLUB. Wal-Mart and SAM'S can
elect to match a portion of the funds raised up to $1,000. Events held off the
premises of a Wal-Mart store or SAM'S CLUB are also eligible for funding when a
Wal-Mart or SAM'S CLUB associate is actively involved in the event.
Additionally, once the Wal-Mart or SAM'S CLUB has met certain criteria in
the Matching Grant Program each year, a second source of funding, direct
grants, is awarded to the store / club to use in the community. These funds do
not require a fundraiser to be held; instead the funds can be awarded directly
to a deserving organization.
More than 80,000 grants, totaling $61 million, were awarded nationally
through the Community Grant program last year. Additional funds were also
raised by participating community organizations who received matching funds.
"This year, Sam's Club of Waco was able to give $30,000 back to our
community", George Eskew, Sam's Club Manager of Waco said. "We try to help as
many non-profits as possible including Salvation Army, Caritas, Waco Center for
Youth and the Methodist Home, just to name a few."
The donation comes as a welcome relief this year to The Salvation
Army. The Salvation Army is coping with the financial impact of our economic
downturn.
"Sam's Club and Wal-Mart have been a wonderful partner with The Salvation
Army for many years, especially during the holiday months when they allow us to
ring the bell outside their storefronts," stated Commanding Officer of The
Salvation Army in Waco, Russell Czajkowski.
Captain Czajkowski elaborates on what the money will be used for.
"The money we receive will help all of our programs now during Christmas as
well as throughout the year, he states. "Programs such as our Homeless Shelter,
where we serve three meals a day, 365 days a year, our Social Service program,
which includes a food panty, a feeding program, utility, rent, and prescription
assistance, Christmas assistance, clothing and emergency shelter. It also
will help with our after-school programs for children in our community and
Emergency Disaster Services, whose focus is to help those victims of natural or
man-made disasters."
On behalf of Salvation Army of Waco, thank you Sam's Club and Wal-Mart for
your continued support!
