| School will be ending soon and with hot weather fast approaching, local
children and young adults will be in need of cooler clothes. And before you
know it, school will be back in session. Parents must often provide new school
clothes and supplies to last their children through the new school year. Many
rely on resources such as The Salvation Army Family Store to supply their
families' back-to-school clothing needs.
One of Baylor's elite fraternities, Phi Delta Theta, is giving back to our
community during these tough economic times by hosting a two day clothing drive
for The Salvation Army of Waco on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 3rd and 4th.
This event will take place at Fountain Mall located in the middle of Baylor
campus.
"Over this past Christmas, I basically sat in my home and unwrapped gift
after gift of clothing, each one I've worn at least 5 times since, and I began
to realize that there are a lot of people in our local Baylor community that
haven't been quite as blessed," Philanthropy Chair of Pi Delta Theta, David
Cook said. "Less than a week later, I was cleaning out of my closet all the
clothes that I knew I wouldn't be wearing anymore, and it struck me - Why would
anyone throw away what someone else needs? We hope that with this clothing
drive, all of the Baylor/Waco community can come together and support those who
truly need it most, and put aside our own selfishness and begin to truly
care."
Phi Delta Theta's goal is to collect over 1,200 items of clothing and fill
up the entire Salvation Army Family Truck, which will be parked on Baylor
Campus from 10a - 6p each day.
"We are always grateful for the community's support, especially when it
comes from young adults and children," Commanding Officer, Captain Russell
Czajkowski said. "Hosting a clothing drive focuses on giving to those less
fortunate who can not afford high-priced clothing. Personal rewards and self
worth are taught to those that participate, it shows that they can make a
difference in our community."
The Salvation Army of Waco Family Store offers clothing, household
furnishings and a variety of other items at affordable prices. 100% of the
money raised through the sale of items goes back into the social service
programs here locally in McLennan County. By purchasing or donating clothing,
you are not only helping clothe school children in your community, you are
helping to feed the hungry, provide transitional housing and assisting many
clients in regaining their self-esteem.
"We hope that with this clothing drive, all of the Baylor/Waco community can
come together and support those who truly need it most, and put aside our own
selfishness and begin to truly care," Cook said.
